Blog #9.  October 29, 2022 Το Εβραικο Μουσειο παρουσιαζει την εκθεση Νεα Υορκη 1962-1964.  Η εκθεση εχει περιπου 180 εκθεματα απο την τεχνη εκεινης της περιοδου. Τα χρονια 1962-64 ηταν σημαντικα - η ενταση με τον Φιντελ Καστρο στην Κουβα, ο Μαρτιν Λουθιρ Κινγκ και το κινημα των ανθρωπινων δικαιωματων ,  η δολοφονια του Κεννεντη- επιρρεασαν τους καλλιτεχνες της Νεας Υορκης και τα εργα τους.   At the Jewish Museum the current show N ew York: 1962-1964  explores a pivotal three-year period in the history of art and culture in New York City, examining how artists living and working in New York responded to their rapidly changing world. The show includes more than 180 works of art—all made or seen in New York between 1962-1964.  Blog #8. October 22, 2022 On Friday October 21st, M arta Smith's  solo show opened at the Alter Works Studios, 30-09 35th Avenue, in Long Island City,  Queens. It will be on view 12 to 9 daily until November 4th.  The title of the show is based  on a Greek expression Ωραια Μερα - Beautiful Day.  To quote from the written explanation Marta provided  The Greeks coined the word for beautiful (ωραίος) from the word for time (ώρα).  In a sense, then, beautiful is what is timely. Like August figs or Autumn persimmons. Or perhaps shaped by time. Like rocks on the shore and pebbles on the beach. Sometimes beautiful is what takes time. Like clay slowly taking shape, then hardening into a pot. Art is engagement with time, ultimately, whether it is itself timeless or ephemeral (from ημέρα/μέρα, by the way: lasting only for a day).  In any case, it was about time this ωραία μέρα came, when I have the joy of presenting some of my new work at the Studio, hoping you will find it, well, ωραία.

 BLOG #7. October 15, 2022.  GOWANUS Art Fair This weekend, October 15 and 16, 2022 is the Arts Gowanus Open Studios 2022 in Brooklyn.  In this 26 years old event more than 300 artists  participate with paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, mix media, and textiles.  The studios are mainly in buildings along 2nd, 3rd and 4th avenues from 9th street to St. Mark's Place. Each studio had its distinct character and emerging artists had a great opportunity for exposure. Here are some pictures of the event.      The diverse creativity of local artists made this event a "must see".  BLOG #6 October 8, 2022 Γεια σας, Αυτην την εβδομαδα η Σαρον Σπρανκγ ειχε ατομικη εκθεση Passionate Jungles στην Gallery Henoch.  Ενα απο τα πορτραιτα ειναι της Μισελ Ομπαμα και θα παει στον Λεuκο Οικο. Sharron Sprung,one of the instructors at the Art Students League, has a solo show at the Henoch Gallery.  Among the works was the portrait of Michelle Obama that was commissioned for the White House. _____________________ Στην Pace Gallery εχει ο Lozano Hemmer μια μεγαλη  installation "Pulse Topology".  3000 λαμπες κρεμασμενες απο το ταβανι αντιχουν το παλμο της καρδιας του καθε θεατη/επισκεπτη. Pace Gallery had an installation by Lozano Hemmer, "Pulse Topology".  3000 light bulbs were hanging from the ceiling and echoed the sound of the heart beat of the viewer as he/she approached the installation.     Blog No. 5   October 2nd, 2022 Hello everyone, Many thanks to Maria Livanos who told me about the show Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Edgefield, South Carolina" currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum. It is a powerful and often haunting exhibit of stoneware pieces made by enslaved African-American men, women and children the decades before the Civil War (1861-1865) in a clay rich area at Edgefield, in South Carolina.  The clay pieces are durable impervious, utilitarian containers used for food storage and in food preparation.  The pieces through their artistry and creative ingenuity, tell a story of brutal oppression of the enslaved individuals and the harsh and often inhumane working conditions under which the potters worked and sometimes died.
